While attending Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, Franklin Pierce was a classmate of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. Pierce and Hawthorne established a friendship at Bowdoin that would last until Pierce's death in 1869. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote Pierce's campaign biography for him.
